Russia hit back at Biden’s comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin at a news conference after a NATO summit in Washington, saying Biden’s comments were “absolutely unacceptable.”
“We continue to consider such disrespectful comments by a head of state about another head of state to be completely unacceptable and intolerable,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Reuters. “I’m talking about President Putin.”
Biden, speaking at his first solo news conference this year after just wrapping up days of talks with international leaders, including Ukraine’s allies, said Putin had sowed fear in Europe.
“Anyone who thought NATO’s time was over was reminded by President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said Thursday, “and some of Europe’s oldest and deepest fears have been resurrected as homicidal maniacs are once again on the march.”
Peskov said the comments did not reflect well on Biden.
“This is something that has been brought to our direct attention and is completely unacceptable to us,” he said.
During his speech, Biden criticized former President Trump for his ties with Putin.
Just before the start of the press conference, Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin” while introducing him at a NATO event, but quickly corrected himself.
In later remarks, he mistakenly said his vice president was “President Trump.”
Peskov said “the whole world noticed” his gaffe.
Both the NATO summit and the press conference were seen as key moments for Biden, who has come under growing pressure to step aside and let someone else take on former President Trump in this fall’s election.
Peskov told reporters that Russia was not in a position to make any official comment.
“Given the context of the national political debate that we’re witnessing in the United States right now, it’s understandable that perhaps it has caused such a strong reaction,” he said of Biden’s gaffe, “but this is not about us, this is about the United States.”
