The 2024 Republican National Convention: What to know

The 2024 Republican National Convention kicked off its celebratory program on Monday after the GOP formally nominated President Trump as its presidential candidate for a third time, and will spend four nights in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, rallying support ahead of the November election.

Where the action takes place

The main event of the quadrennial event will be held from July 15 to 18 at the Fiserv Forum, the arena that is home to the Milwaukee Bucks professional basketball team. More than 50,000 people, including hundreds of journalists from around the world, are expected to attend.

Throughout the four days, the usual convention activities will take place: Approximately 2,400 delegates need to approve the platform and formally nominate a presidential candidate. Trump And his running mate, who has yet to be named, will hear from national candidates and many others who are calling for support for Trump and attacking Democrats.

The Trump-endorsed Republican platform’s soft language on abortion has irked some social conservatives.

Who are the speakers?

The RNC has yet to release a detailed schedule of events, but several speakers have already been announced, including Donald Trump Jr., who will reportedly speak directly before his father.

Also speaking at the convention were Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, former first lady Melania Trump, Teamsters Chairman Sean O’Brien, UFC President Dana White, model Amber Rose, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and Indiana Rep. Jim Banks.

Also scheduled to speak will be several ordinary Americans who are feeling the effects of President Biden’s disastrous economic and border policies, in addition to a surge in crime.

Michael Morin, the brother of Rachel Morin, the Maryland mother of five who was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant, is scheduled to speak, along with others from a fraternity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that made headlines for saving a U.S. flag during an anti-Israel protest.

President Trump is expected to accept the nomination in a speech on the final day of the convention, July 18, and his running mate is scheduled to be announced by July 15. The running mate is then scheduled to speak at the convention on July 17.

Tuesday’s theme will be “Make America Safe Again,” focusing on how Joe Biden and the Democrats’ soft on crime and open border policies have led to a crime surge in many cities, creating what the campaign calls a “hollowed-out dystopian nightmare.”

“Make America Strong Again” will be Wednesday’s theme, focusing on President Trump’s foreign policy accomplishments and policy challenges.

The theme for the final day, Thursday, is “Make America Great Again.”

“President Donald J. Trump will usher in a new Gilded Age for America. America’s standing will be restored at home and abroad,” the campaign claims.

“American families will once again experience prosperity, security and strength. Our faded and dilapidated cities and communities will experience revival. Americans will once again have reason to be hopeful and optimistic about our nation’s future. President Trump will Make America Great Again!”

What is the party platform?

The Republican platform, a formal statement of policy positions, was approved by the party’s platform committee and released Monday and is expected to be approved on the first day of national elections next week.

The 16-page platform accepts Trump’s position that abortion should be decided by U.S. states, but makes no mention of a federal ban or protecting the fetus as a person under the U.S. Constitution — doctrines that have been included in previous platforms and that influential evangelical leaders have called for.

The non-binding platform also promises that Trump and Republicans will build a missile defense system over U.S. skies, conduct the largest deportation of illegal immigrants in U.S. history, make Trump’s signature tax cuts permanent and pass a “massive tax cut for working people.” It also says they will destroy foreign drug cartels, protect Medicare and Social Security benefits, and support public funding for private school tuition.
