Uruguay defeats Canada to take Copa America third-place match

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Luis Suarez scored the tying goal two minutes into added time and Uruguay overcame a 2-2 draw with Canada on Saturday night to win 4-3 on penalties and move into third place in the Copa America.

Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rocher stopped a weak penalty kick from Ismael Koné who stumbled on Canada’s third attempt, then Alphonso Davies hit Canada’s fifth and final kick off the crossbar.

Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Suarez all saved Uruguay’s shots with goalkeeper Dane St. Clair saving the visitors, while Jonathan David, Moise Bonvito and Mathieu Choigniere scored for Canada, who took the lead in the shootout.

Bentancur put Uruguay ahead in the eighth minute, but Canada extended their lead to 2-1 with goals from Kone in the 22nd minute and David in the 80th minute.

The 37-year-old Suarez, Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, scored his 69th goal for the national team with a quick strike after receiving a cross from Jose Gimenez.

As Rocher prepared to take Bonvito’s penalty kick, St. Clair received an unusual yellow card, likely for trying to distract the goalkeeper.
