Mardy Fish won again at Lake Tahoe.
After a stellar performance on Saturday with 34 points, he added 26 points in the final round for a total of 83 points to win the 2024 American Century Championship by four points. This is his second victory at the tournament, having also won in 2020.
The event uses a modified Stableford scoring system. To make the scoring easier to understand, players earn 1 point for a par, 3 points for a birdie, and 6 points for an eagle. Players who make a bogey or worse lose 2 points.
He edged out Joe Pavelski, who recorded two consecutive rounds with 29 points. In third place was legendary LPGA superstar Annika Sorenstam, who earned 68 points over the three-day tournament.
Fish had a fairly lackluster first round result of 23 points, with five birdies, two bogeys and a double.
But on Saturday he made a complete turnaround, as the former tennis player birdied nine of his final 13 holes to take a seven-point lead heading into the final day.
Fisch scored 26 points on Sunday, enough to hold off the Dallas Stars forwards. His 83 points fell one shy of the conference record set by Billy Joe Toliver in 2010.
“I’ve won a few celebrity golf tournaments, so I feel comfortable coming here after winning in Dallas and Maine,” Fish said, “and this is a tournament I want to win. The American Century is the Super Bowl that closes out the rest of the year.”
Fish won $150,000 of the $750,000 prize.
Stephen Curry will not be coming to Lake Tahoe to defend his title this year, choosing to focus on the 2024 Paris Olympics.
But the three-day American Century Championship featured some great golf, not to mention spectators who came out in droves to cheer on their favorite celebrities.
Charles Barkley tied for 58th with a minus-4 point finish, his best finish of his career, and John Smoltz was fourth with 64 points.
