House Democratic leaders reportedly told Axios that following this weekend’s assassination attempt on President Trump, many lawmakers have given up on seeing him serve a second term.
Most of the lawmakers who spoke to Axios said they couldn’t make proper predictions until after the Democratic National Convention, but at least one senior leader was confident former President Donald Trump would win the election.
“We are all prepared for President Trump to be re-elected,” the congressman was quoted as saying.
The anonymous quote sparked numerous reactions on social media.
“If you’re a ‘Democrat leader’ who feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make way for real leaders who refuse to cave to fascism. Leaders like this are effectively useless to the American people. Retire,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said.

Democrats outside of Trump’s presidency told Axios that the assassination attempt likely ended any efforts to remove President Joe Biden as a candidate.

Privately, Democratic lawmakers have said they are prioritizing their own safety and that of their staff, rather than settling political differences in an effort to calm the country.
“We’re just mourning and focused on keeping our team safe,” one House Democrat said.
Another top House Democrat said he would not pursue any motion to impeach Biden.
Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), strongly condemned the violence and sent their best wishes to former President Donald Trump. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) also condemned the violence.
