New York Times Convenes Focus Group of Black Men Who Back Trump

a The New York Times A focus group of 11 black men who support former President Donald Trump said they had deep respect for the Republican front-runner and his record, and disputed Democrats’ claims that he is a “racist.”

of Focus Groups This is part of a series aimed at revealing what both Republicans and Democrats don’t understand about black men. Times (We’ve held similar focus groups with voters who support President Joe Biden.) Discussions covered a range of issues, from the economy to education, border security to criminal justice reform. Participants ranged in age from 28 to 57 and came from a wide range of educational and employment backgrounds.

Trump’s image as a celebrity businessman was very appealing to the men in our group. Some were initially put off by his rhetoric and policies, including the Muslim ban. [sic]But they said their views changed after observing Trump’s policies and learning about his record in office. They praised his economic savvy, his low inflation during his presidency, and his emphasis on law and order. Trump’s comments in support of federal funding for historically black colleges and universities were repeatedly cited as evidence that he is not a racist. Some felt more favorably about Trump after his recent criminal conviction. But they said some friends and family members strongly disagreed with them about Trump.

When asked to describe Trump in one word, words used included “leadership,” “courageous” and “respected.”

Recent polls have shown a shift in support for Trump among black voters, particularly black men, and while Republicans typically win only a fraction of the black vote, even a slight improvement could be enough to deal a blow to Democrats.
