‘Buck Stops with Me,’ But ‘I Do Plan to Stay on’

In a segment of an ABC News interview that aired on “World News Tonight” on Monday, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, “should never have happened” and that “I take responsibility,” but that she intends to remain in her position.

“This is something that should never have happened,” Cheatle said.

ABC News Supreme Court correspondent Pierre Thomas asked, “Who is most responsible for this?”

“My point is, the Secret Service is responsible for protecting the former president,” Cheatle replied.

Thomas continued: “So, are you responsible?”

“I take responsibility. I am the director of the Secret Service. This is unacceptable behavior and should never happen again,” Cheatle responded.

“The president and the secretary of homeland security said today they have 100% confidence in you, yet some members of Congress are calling for you to resign,” Thomas later said.

Cheatle responded, “I appreciate the Secretary’s comments and we will continue to be transparent and communicate with the public.”

Thomas then asked, “Are you sure you want to stay?”

“I plan on staying,” Cheatle replied.
