Teamsters Union Considers Withholding Endorsement in Presidential Race

The Teamsters union, which represents more than 1 million members, is considering not making any endorsements in this year’s presidential election, in a move that would be a major blow to President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign.

according to sauce Teamsters officials told Reuters they may decide not to endorse any candidate for president, which would be the first time the union has done so since 1996.

While the Teamsters are historically associated with the Democratic Party, the union supported Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Sources told Reuters that an endorsement for Trump remains unlikely, but an endorsement for Biden may also not materialize.

“No final decision has been made yet,” a Teamsters spokesman said.

On Monday night at the Republican National Convention, Teamsters Chairman Sean M. O’Brien made it clear that the union had not yet decided on its endorsement, saying after the historic speech that he had not yet been invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention.

“I am honored to be the first Teamster to address the Republican National Convention in our 121-year history,” O’Brien said at the Republican National Convention.

“President Trump has the guts to open the door to the Republican National Convention, which is unprecedented. No other candidate in this race would have invited the Teamsters here,” O’Brien said. “… Whether you like him or not, I think we can all agree that after what happened to him on Saturday, he’s proven to be a very tough guy,” he said, to cheers from the Republican National Convention crowd.
