House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on Wednesday issued a subpoena to U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle in response to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Comer Subpoena Rep. Cheatle appears before the House Oversight Committee Hearing On July 22, the director of the Secret Service was fired to answer questions about the July 13 assassination attempt on President Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. The assassination attempt has raised many questions about the capabilities of the U.S. Secret Service and the failings that allowed 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to target the former president from a rooftop just 130 yards away. “The lack of transparency and failure to cooperate with the Committee on this urgent matter from both the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service casts further doubt on your ability to lead the Secret Service and requires the attached subpoena to compel your appearance before the Oversight Committee,” the subpoena reads.

The former president suffered an ear injury during a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where one rally attendee was killed and two others were injured.
“The United States Secret Service is committed to its mission and fails on Saturday when a madman attempted to assassinate President Trump, killing innocent victims and harming others,” Chairman Comer said. “The American people need Secretary Kimberly Cheatle to explain these security failures and how we can prevent this from happening again,” Comer said in a press release. “We look forward to Secretary Cheatle’s testimony on Monday, July 22.”
Since the assassination attempt, several prominent lawmakers have called for an investigation and public hearings into the incident. On Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he would launch a “thorough investigation” into the assassination attempt.
“Our prayers go out to him, all those attending the rally, those injured and the families of those who lost their lives,” Johnson said. post Regarding X. “Congress will conduct a full investigation into this tragedy to determine whether there were any security lapses.”
The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
