California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff called on President Joe Biden to step down as a candidate.

Rep. Schiff, D-Calif., released a statement Wednesday saying he has “serious concerns about whether the president can defeat President Donald Trump in November.”
“While it is up to President Biden to decide whether to withdraw from the campaign trail, I believe the time has come for him to pass the baton,” Schiff said, “so we can defeat Donald Trump in the next election and ensure his legacy of leadership.”
Schiff reportedly informed the Biden campaign about the statement before releasing it.
But Schiff went on to tone down calls for the president to step down, adding that Biden was “one of the most significant presidents in our country’s history” and that “Biden’s lifetime of service as a senator, vice president and now president has made our country better.”
“But our country is at a crossroads,” Schiff continued. “President Trump’s reelection would undermine the very foundations of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat Donald Trump in November.”
“But make no mistake: Whoever our party nominates, or if the nominee remains the president, I will be committed to their success,” he added. “There is only one goal: to defeat Donald Trump. The stakes are just too high.”
Schiff’s comments came a day after he warned Democratic donors that if Biden remains the nominee, Democrats would lose their current majority in the Senate, fail to gain control of the House and ultimately lose the election.
“If he becomes the nominee, I think we’re going to lose,” Schiff reportedly told donors.
Biden recently argued that he wouldn’t run again if he didn’t believe he was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024.
“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the agenda ahead will only help Trump and hurt us. Now is the time to come together, to move forward as a party and defeat Donald Trump,” Biden added.
