Anthony Edwards criticized for strange action during Timberwolves defeat: 'Weakness'

Anthony Edwards Faces Criticism for Postgame Gesture

Anthony Edwards, the star of the Timberwolves, found himself under scrutiny after displaying an unusual act of sportsmanship. This came during the decisive playoff game against the Spurs in Minneapolis, where he walked across the court to congratulate his opponents with over eight minutes still left on the clock, resulting in a 139-106 loss for his team.

Udonis Haslem, a seasoned Basketball Hall of Famer who enjoyed a successful career with the Miami Heat, was particularly critical of Edwards during Amazon Prime’s postgame analysis. He pointed out that while Edwards is a talented player, he still has much to learn about leadership. Haslem remarked that he would never approach the opposing team mid-game, stating, “As a leader of my squad, I wouldn’t show any weakness like that.” He expressed disbelief that towards the end of the game, his focus would still be on his team and the competitive nature of the situation.

Dirk Nowitzki and Blake Griffin, both respected figures in the basketball world, shared their astonishment at Edwards’ actions. Nowitzki said, “I’ve never seen anything like this,” emphasizing that showing respect should ideally happen after the game concludes. Griffin echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that patience is key when it comes to postgame interactions.

Traditionally, players tend to wait until the end of the game or the postgame handshake to acknowledge their competitors’ efforts. There have been exceptions, as in the case of the Bad Boys Pistons, who famously skipped handshakes after being eliminated by the Bulls in 1991.

Edwards had already been ejected when he chose to step away from the bench to offer his congratulations to the Spurs. He approached various players and coaches, acknowledging their performance. Postgame, he explained that it was a gesture of respect, particularly since the game was nearly over.

As commentators noted his unexpected move, play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle remarked on how Edwards, aware of his coach’s intentions to clear the bench, sought out the Spurs’ bench to interact with them, which was indeed a rare occurrence.

Former Coach Stan Van Gundy humorously anticipated Haslem’s reaction on air, suggesting it might have been wiser for Edwards to wait until the game’s conclusion.

Ultimately, Edwards returned to the bench, wearing a hoodie, as the Timberwolves were unable to push forward to the NBA Finals. Despite suffering a knee injury during the playoffs, he still made a notable contribution, averaging 23.7 points per game. However, the Timberwolves again fell short in the conference semifinals.

The team has demonstrated considerable talent, yet they continue to struggle within the challenging Western Conference landscape. This reality often puts Edwards in the situation of needing to congratulate opposing teams at the end of each season.

Griffin remarked on the balance of respect and timing, stating, “I love how he said he wanted to honor them. But wait, perhaps it’s just about being patient until the end like everyone else.”
