During MSNBC’s coverage of the third day of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, MSNBC host Joy Reid argued that if “aging” President Joe Biden can recover from COVID-19, it should be treated as a sign of strength, in the same way that former 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump recovered after being shot in an assassination attempt.
“What I’m wondering about this is, these are both elderly people. Donald Trump is an elderly man who, for some reason, was given nine seconds to take an iconic photo in the middle of a mass shooting. It’s a strange situation. It’ll unravel at some point. But the fact that he survived it and bounced back and went straight to the convention is being presented in the media world as a sign of strength. This current president of the United States is 81 years old and has COVID. If he’s supposed to be fine in a few days, doesn’t that convey the exact same thing? He’s older than Trump and is strong enough to be infected with a disease that was once really deadly to someone his age. So if he’s fine and can come back and do a rally, isn’t that the exact same thing? It’s not the exact same thing. It’s not the same incident, but it’s all about an elderly man bouncing back from a disease.”
Fellow host Jen Psaki responded, “That’s expected,” but said isolating Biden would be a problem for the campaign.
