Biden will ‘absolutely’ hurt longtime Dem senator’s chances of retaining battleground state seat: McCorrmick

Milwaukee – Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick said the mounting political woes for the Biden administration will “certainly” hurt the campaign of longtime Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.

“I think what’s becoming clear now is that this election is going to be a choice between the strengths and weaknesses of the top candidates and the strengths and weaknesses between myself and Senator Casey,” McCormick said, adding that Biden’s performance in office would “certainly” hurt Casey’s campaign.

“The fact is, 80% of Pennsylvanians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. Skyrocketing inflation, 20% increases in prices, wallet issues, 60% of Pennsylvanians are living paycheck to paycheck. And it’s because of Casey and Biden’s bad decisions and policies – the spending, the energy wars, the open borders, the 4,000 Pennsylvanians who died from fentanyl last year,” McCormick said.

McCormick, an Army combat veteran and former CEO of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, served as under secretary of Commerce for industry and security and under secretary of the Treasury for international affairs under former President George W. Bush. He is running in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the nation.

Democrats have been stepping up calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race following a dismal performance in last month’s debate, in which he stumbled over his words, at times lost his train of thought and spoke in a raspy voice. Rep. Adam Schiff of California on Wednesday became the latest member of his party to call for Biden to withdraw.

“While it is up to President Biden to decide whether to withdraw from the race, I believe the time has come for him to pass the baton,” Schiff said, “so we can defeat Donald Trump in the next election and ensure his legacy of leadership.”

McCormick is running for senator from Biden’s childhood home state, seeking to defeat Casey, who has held the seat since 2007. At the federal level, Pennsylvania is also a key battleground state in this election, having narrowly voted for Trump in 2016 and won for Biden by 1.17 percentage points in 2020.

Taking to the stage at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night, McCormick criticized his rivals, saying the election was “a choice between American greatness and its sad and shameful decline.”

“My opponent’s name is Bob Casey, but you probably don’t know him because he doesn’t do anything,” McCormick said. “Bob Casey has been sitting in a chair and getting paid for 18 years. He’s a naive, liberal, career politician who doesn’t do anything.”

Former New York congressman exposes years of escalating Democratic rhetoric ahead of Trump assassination attempt

“It feels like an honor to be here, to be here as a candidate. The energy in the room is electric, you can feel it. I think you can sense the unity. I think Saturday’s shooting has further united our party. It was also a solemn event. We realized how close we came to losing our president, and how devastating that was for our country. So I’m happy to be here and I think we have a clear vision for the future,” he said.

McCormick stressed that the RNC and Trump’s message was one of unity, especially after the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday evening during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was shot in the ear during the attack, two other attendees were wounded and another man, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, was shot and killed while trying to protect his wife and family.

McCormick said Trump’s selection of Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate would further spread a message of unity and also be beneficial in House races across the country, particularly for McCormick in Pennsylvania.

“I’m very excited. He’s a veteran. Being a veteran is a big thing in Pennsylvania. We have a huge veteran community. He understands Appalachia. He understands the plight of working families in Western Pennsylvania, where I live. He understands the importance of natural gas and the energy industry is a big part of Pennsylvania’s future,” McCormick said, calling Vance a “young, energetic leader.”
