Utah Governor Spencer Cox, a Republican, said last week that he would not endorse either the former president or Joe Biden, but on Friday he endorsed Donald Trump.
Cox said at a press conference Friday morning. Said He said he would “do everything I can” to help Trump win the election and unite the country.
“I promised him that I would work with him to reduce tensions in the country and from what I’ve heard from those around him, I sincerely hope that he will keep that promise,” Cox added.
The Deseret News reported:
Last week, Cox said he doesn’t plan to vote for Trump. “I’m not voting for either candidate for president this year,” Cox said during a July 10 appearance on CNN. He plans to write in a candidate instead. Cox said he didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020.
Cox in February Said He said the Republicans would be making a “big mistake” if they nominated Trump for president.
The Utah governor has said he is not anti-Trump. He acknowledges he has “serious” issues with Trump, including over the former president’s alleged role in the Jan. 6 protests, after which Gov. Cox called on Trump to resign because he believes “it’s good for the country.”
The Utah governor said the assassination attempt on President Trump has changed his mind.
At a news conference, Cox said he wrote a letter to Trump after the assassination attempt: “Mr. President, I believe in good angels, and I believe you can be that kind of leader for our struggling country. It’s a huge burden for anyone to bear,” he quoted from the letter.
“In that moment, you represented the best of America in its darkest hours – you refused to give in despite the bloodshed, and literally demonstrated courage under fire,” he wrote.
