WASHINGTON (AP) — China’s panda diplomacy may have a real winner: the pandas themselves. In the decades since Beijing began working with U.S. and European zoos to protect the animals, their numbers in the wild have grown to 1,900 from about 1,100 in the 1980s and they are no longer considered “endangered” but have been given the safer “vulnerable” status.
