Biden Wouldn’t Be Nominee if Voters Saw Debate Before Primaries

On MSNBC’s “José Diaz-Balart Report” broadcast on Friday, Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), who has called on President Joe Biden to drop out of the race, argued that if voters in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary had watched Biden’s debate performance before voting, they would not have nominated him.

“Like I say, do you think that people who voted for him are going to look back at that debate right before 14 million people cast their ballots and change the way they vote? I think so. Things have changed since that election took place. The Democratic Party has a process. We have delegates. We can nominate any candidate we want. It doesn’t have to be any one person. I just ask that our party understands this,” Smith said.

Smith also said Biden is completely ill-equipped to deliver his campaign message against 2024 Republican presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump, and that this issue goes beyond performance in the presidential debates. He said questions about Biden’s health, about which the White House has not been fully transparent, are a hindrance to the Democrats’ case against Trump and the success of a Biden administration, and that Biden’s campaign is not “viable” if he is still struggling to gain Democratic support at this point in the campaign.
