Cardinals forced to clarify home run celebration not an homage to Trump surviving assassination attempt

St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Alec Burleson hit a 435-foot solo home run to help his team to a 6-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves, but it was his celebration that caught the attention of baseball fans.

As Burleson rounded the bases, he and his teammates pumped their fists and covered their right ears. Burleson did the same as he rounded third base, and several teammates in the dugout followed suit. It was Burleson’s 18th home run of the season.

Baseball fans on social media wondered whether the celebration was inspired by former President Trump and his strength after he was wounded in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last week.

Cardinals veteran Matt Carpenter St. Louis Post-Dispatch The celebration, Burleson said, was reminiscent of his college days as a rapper nicknamed Biscuit, with his hands over his ears as invisible headphones.

“This is clearly not a political statement. It misses the point,” Carpenter said.

Although Trump was injured in the shooting, he managed to attend last week’s Republican National Convention and ultimately deliver a speech accepting the party’s presidential nomination.

Burleson had two hits and two RBIs in five at-bats and is currently batting .294 with 59 RBIs.

St. Louis improved to 52-47 on the season. The Braves fell to 54-44.
