Recap: Biden endorses Harris after dropping out of 2024 race

President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, bowing to pressure from Democratic lawmakers who called on him to drop out after his debate performance shocked the political world.

Biden announced the decision in a social media post Sunday afternoon.

President Trump on Sunday endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee after she announced she would not seek reelection.

The debate sparked weeks of confusion around Biden’s campaign, with Democratic lawmakers, donors, prominent political analysts and celebrities abandoning the possibility that Biden could beat former President Trump in November’s presidential election.

The situation came to a head this week when reports emerged that Democratic leaders in Congress had urged Biden to resign, and the situation worsened when Biden tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to quarantine.

Biden secured enough delegates during this year’s primary elections to formally accept the Democratic nomination at the party convention, which is scheduled to begin in Chicago on August 19.
