MIAMI — Christian Scott’s tendency to get beaten by one pitch has marred what was a previously solid performance for the Mets.
On Sunday, that pitch came in the fourth inning, when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a three-run home run against the rookie.
It was the eighth home run Scott has allowed in 47 1/3 innings this season and helped the Mets lose 4-2 to the Marlins at LawnDepot Park.
“He’s a guy that throws strikes a lot, and I think that’s part of his development as a player at this level,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “When you’re facing a hard hitter in a situation like this, you’ve got to be good with your pitches, especially when you’re ahead in the count.”
Chisholm hit a slider with a full count and hit a home run, but Scott said he wasn’t disappointed with where the pitch was placed.
“He took a good swing,” Scott said. “If you throw that ball 100 times, you can usually get an out. I didn’t think it missed. It was right where I wanted it to be.”
Scott was replaced after throwing 75 pitches at the end of the inning.
Overall, Scott allowed three earned runs on seven hits, struck out four and walked two, posting a 4.56 ERA in eight starts for the Mets.
“Today was one of those games where they made it hard on him,” Mendoza said. “They put him in some good at-bats. I thought he was OK, but at this level you’ve got to keep pitching.”

The Mets acquired right-handed pitcher TJ Shook from the Brewers in exchange for left-handed relief pitcher Tyler Jay.
Shook has appeared in 17 games (11 starts) at Double-A this season, posting a 4.90 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.
Jose Quintana returned to the Mets clubhouse after staying at the team hotel the past two days because he was feeling unwell, and manager Mendoza said he did not have COVID-19.
The left-hander was released from the starting rotation two days late and is expected to play against the Yankees on Tuesday.
Jake Diekman, who had a 19.29 ERA in five relief appearances this month, did not allow a run in the final four outs.
Diekman’s 1 1/3 innings pitched matched his longest outing of the season.
