Mexican Cops Escort Thousands of Migrants as New Caravan Heads North Fearing Trump Will Close Border

Mexican authorities are escorting more than 3,000 migrants who have begun heading north as part of a new migrant caravan, with the ultimate goal of reaching the U.S. border and applying for asylum or other protected status.

The caravan confirmed an exclusive report by Breitbart Texas that activists are planning a caravan, which is set to begin Sunday at the border between southern Mexico and Guatemala. As with previous caravans, members of Mexico’s National Guard and state police were on hand to help direct traffic as the migrants walked along various roads.

About 3,000 migrants, mostly from Central and South America, began walking north along a paved highway from the city of Hidalgo in Chiapas state on Sunday. Mexican media outlets say the migrants fear that “the border will be closed” if Donald Trump takes over the White House and claim they are trying to reach the border before the US elections.

Miguel Salazar, an immigrant from El Salvador, Said According to the Associated Press, he fears he will no longer have the opportunity to enter the United States as an asylum seeker under the Trump administration.

“We run the risk of being denied admission,” Salazar told The Associated Press. The migrants, who are from El Salvador, said they are concerned the Trump administration will stop allowing interviews for migrants seeking asylum using the CBP One application. Currently, 1,450 migrants are allowed into the U.S.-Mexico border each day through seven land border ports of entry.

Breitbart Texas’ original article, citing intelligence provided to the outlet by a senior source at Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM), claimed that the caravan left on Sunday morning and headed to Mexico City, where the migrants would largely disperse before continuing north using various modes of transportation.

Another migrant, Oswaldo Reyna, 55, told The Associated Press that he crossed into Mexico from Guatemala more than a month ago and was waiting to join the caravan in Ciudad Hidalgo after learning about it on social media. Reyna, a Cuban national, disputed former President Trump’s recent comments about immigrants, telling The Associated Press, “We are not delinquents. We are hardworking people who left the country to get ahead because we are suffering a lot of hardships in our country.”

Before the caravan set off, officials had expected large numbers due to the growing number of migrants in Chiapas. As part of a deal with the Biden administration, the Mexican government has been bussing migrants south to reduce the number of migrants crossing north. Migrants who spoke to Breitbart Texas claim they were lied to about being promised various assistance and benefits to help them make the temporary crossing to Chiapas or Mexico City. Once the migrants reach their southern destinations, they are left to fend for themselves.

Mexican law enforcement has previously dispersed caravans within days of their formation as they traveled through the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.

According to a report by Breitbart Texas, migrant apprehensions at the southwest border have fallen to their lowest level since President Biden took office due to increased immigration enforcement efforts in Mexico.
