2 killed after small plane crashes during takeoff at MacArthur Airport on Long Island

Two people were killed when a small plane crashed at MacArthur Airport on Long Island on Monday evening, according to authorities and reports.

The single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36 was taking off from Ronkonkoma Airport when it crashed near the end of Runway 6 about 6:15 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration and an airport spokesman.

A spokesman said the plane was damaged and that the airport fire and rescue team was rushing to rescue the two people on board.

Photos of the wreckage showed the small white plane had torn apart near the front of its nose and appeared to have landed in a grassy area. Officials gathered around the plane, which had a yellow tarp draped over the front of it.

A MacArthur Airport official said travellers should check with their airlines about possible delays or cancellations.
