President Biden made his first public comments on Monday during a call with VP Harris’ headquarters since announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race the previous day. President Biden endorsed VP Harris following her announcement.
Speaking to campaign staff in Wilmington, Delaware, Harris acknowledged that the past day has been “a roller coaster” since Biden announced he was dropping out of the race, referring to his abrupt withdrawal just weeks before the Democratic National Convention.
“I know yesterday’s news was a surprise and difficult for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do,” he said. “I know it’s hard because you all gave yourselves to me to win this election, to help me win the nomination, to win the nomination, and to win the presidency.”

Biden said he plans to be “fully engaged” and campaign for Harris.

In her opening remarks, Harris acknowledged the gravity of Biden’s departure but had only kind words for the commander in chief.
With Biden’s campaign halted, what’s next for Democrats?
“We all have mixed feelings about this,” Harris said, “and I just have to say this: I love Joe Biden. I love Joe Biden. And I know we all do, because we have so many good reasons to love Joe Biden.”
Democratic delegates are scheduled to hold a virtual roll call soon, with Harris likely to be the nominee.
Biden has faced calls from within his party for him to step down amid concerns about whether he can beat former President Trump in November’s general election. On Monday, Biden thanked Harris and wished her the best of luck.
