Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (Democrat) called Republican vice presidential nominee Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) a “fake” and a “phony” after Vance criticized Democrats, and Vice President Harris in particular, for not publicly raising concerns about President Biden’s mental competency earlier.
Sen. Beshear, in an interview with Kaitlan Collins on CNN’s “The Source” on Monday, said he was “grabbing at straws” in response to Sen. Vance’s criticism.
“Look, J.D. Vance is a fake. A fake. I mean, he started out saying Donald Trump was like Hitler, and now he’s acting like he’s Lincoln,” Beshear said of Vance, who has reversed his support for the president and vice presidential nominee.
Vance launched his public career with a best-selling memoir that was a harsh critique of Trump and his presidency. He called himself an “anti-Trumpist” and described Trump as stupid and reprehensible. Behind closed doors, Vance reportedly likened Trump to Hitler.
But in the Senate, Vance has been one of President Trump’s most staunch supporters and has championed an “America First” approach to policy.
“So the problem with J.D. Vance is he doesn’t have any convictions, but I think his running mate has 34,” Beshear added, referring to Trump’s 34 convictions in New York state for conspiring to conceal information that could harm the public and falsifying business records ahead of the 2016 election.
Beshear was responding to video footage from the rally early Monday, in which he criticized Vance for only now speaking out against President Biden, who dropped out of the race on Sunday but has said he has no intention of stepping down before then.
“Folks, this is unacceptable. You can’t have someone who for three and a half years has clearly not been mentally capable of doing the job,” Vance said at a campaign rally in Middletown, Ohio, on Monday, his first solo campaign appearance since joining the race.
“Kamala Harris lied. My Senate Democratic colleagues lied. The media lied. Everyone who looked at Joe Biden knew he was incompetent to do the job. And for three years they said nothing until he became a political liability,” Vance continued.
Before calling Vance a “fake,” Beshear criticized the way Vance referred to the vice president, who is the top Democratic candidate and the clear frontrunner to succeed Biden.
“First of all, he should call the vice president by that title. She deserves that title. She is Vice President Harris,” Beshear said.
Beshear, a popular Democratic governor in a heavily Republican state, has been mentioned as one of the hypothetical candidates to become vice president if Harris wins the Democratic nomination.
