Vandalism at Georgetown Cupcake
On Sunday at roughly 11:30 p.m., an incident unfolded at the Georgetown Cupcake Shop, situated just a few blocks from the Potomac River. A male suspect shattered the front window using a stolen beer keg, prompting a female baker to flee from the dangerous scene.
After the act, he simply walked away.
“She was really frightened,” said Katherine Berman, co-owner of the shop alongside her sister Sophie Lamontagne. “She’s still shaken up and really upset by this. It’s going to take a considerable emotional toll on her.”
Graduation weekend attracted many students and tourists to Georgetown, adding to the tension in the air. Berman noted that the suspect seemed like a student, likely under the influence, but she quickly dismissed the idea that this was merely a “college prank.”
Initially, the suspect attempted to open a metal trash can on the curb without success, before resorting to seizing the beer keg. Berman mentioned that surveillance footage from a nearby business showed him returning with a barrel from a home nearby.
Her employees sought safety in the back of the store during the chaos until the suspect entered, carrying more barrels.
“He has a sort of anger and arrogance, as if he believes he can do this and escape consequences,” Berman expressed to FOX News Digital. “That’s unacceptable.”
Authorities have since linked the same individual to another after-hours incident on M Street.
Investigators gathered new surveillance footage from earlier this year, revealing him damaging a separate business early in the morning on April 24. In that clip, he is seen wearing a purple paper bracelet and seemingly leaning over a black object on the sidewalk.
“He’s violent, and honestly, we live in a civil society where respect for each other and property is expected, clearly he’s disregarding all that,” Berman stated.
Georgetown Cupcakes became a well-known local bakery after gaining national attention in 2010 via the three-season Discovery series “DC Cupcakes.”
This incident is part of a broader concern regarding vandalism and late-night disturbances affecting parts of Washington, D.C., including the bustling M Street area in Georgetown.
Berman urged anyone with information about the suspect to come forward: “If anyone knows who this person is, we really hope they can help us find him and hold him accountable for his actions.”
Police are encouraging anyone who might assist in identifying the suspect or have details about the vandalism to reach out at 202-727-9099 or text the tip line at 50411. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to charges.
Despite the incident, Georgetown Cupcakes, famous for its long lines, resumed business hours just hours after the vandalism.
