An 80-year-old man living in a small town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by an all-terrain vehicle driver while putting up a sign in his front yard supporting former President Donald Trump’s candidacy.
On Sunday, police received reports of three attacks believed to be committed by the same suspect in Hancock, a small town at the base of the Keweenaw Peninsula, a stretch of Michigan’s northwestern Upper Peninsula that juts out into Lake Superior.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen. Can I die from these injuries? Yes, it’s a possibility.”
Two of the incidents involved vehicles that were “intentionally vandalized.” press release One car had a “broken tire valve,” while the other car’s windows “were all smashed,” the Hancock Police Department spokesman added. Tami Sleeman.
But the third incident could cost the elderly man his life.
On Sunday afternoon, an unidentified 80-year-old man was trying to replace a Trump sign in his front yard in the 1400 block of Anthony Street when a suspected vandal pulled it down. Around 5:45 p.m., while the man was still working on the sign, the ATV driver allegedly returned to the home and struck the man with his vehicle.
The victim was rushed to UP Health System Hospital in Portage, where he remains hospitalized. Critical conditionReports said he may have suffered a “cerebral hemorrhage.”
“You never know what’s going to happen. Can I die from these injuries? Yes, it’s possible,” Sleeman said.
Not only do police believe the ATV driver is responsible for all three incidents, but they also believe all three incidents may have been “politically motivated.” “The perpetrator(s) appear to have been targeting both supporters of Trump and law enforcement,” a police press release said.
Police quickly identified a suspect, who is now presumably deceased. On Monday, the Hancock Police Department reportedly received a call from an individual who “wanted to confess to a crime involving an ATV driver that had occurred within the past 24 hours.” The individual also requested a ride.
Hancock police and the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the caller’s address, where officers and deputies “found a 22-year-old male suspect deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Investigators allegedly found “the quad bike used during the incidents in the city” at the suspect’s home. They also seized electronic devices which will be subjected to forensic analysis. The suspect’s name has not been released.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing and “there is no further threat to the public at this time,” the sheriff’s office statement added.
