Three migrants were shot, two of them fatally, in two separate shootings on Sunday, including one outside the Ryerson Immigrant Center in Brooklyn, and the New York Police Department (NYPD) suspects members of a Venezuelan street gang may be involved, according to reports.
Police said the shootings happened in two locations around 10:44 p.m.
New York Attorney General Letitia James sought to portray the shootings as “gun violence” rather than gang violence, saying in a statement: Said“Last night, two people were killed and one was seriously injured as a result of gun violence in Clinton Hill.”
“My office is working with the NYPD and local elected officials to get information about these shootings and inform our communities,” James added. “We must do more to protect our communities from the dangers of gun violence and ensure all our neighbors have the help they need and can stay safe on our streets.”
One man was shot in the chest near Flushing Avenue and Steuben Street in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Died Shortly after he was taken to Methodist Hospital.
Seven minutes later, two more people were shot dead outside a migrant shelter. New York Post.
A 47-year-old man was shot in the head and died, while the other victim was shot multiple times and remains in critical condition in hospital.
The NYPD has said the two shootings were related and committed by the same man, and that all those involved were immigrants.
Investigators are working under the theory that the shooting may be linked to Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua street gang.
The suspect, who was riding a motorcycle, was hit by a vehicle near the scene of the second shooting and was taken into police custody.

Federal law enforcement agencies are increasingly concerned about the infiltration of the dangerous Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang into the U.S. The gang’s rapid growth comes as President Joe Biden’s migration crisis continues to worsen and he seeks to increase the number of Venezuelans allowed into the United States.
Federal officials said arrests of Tren de Aragua members are surpassed only by members of the 18th Street Gang, the MS-13 Gang, the Paisas Gang, the Sureños Gang and the “other” gang category, and that Tren de Aragua ranks sixth on a list of more than 50 gangs monitored by Customs and Border Protection.
Police are urging anyone with information about the Brooklyn shooting to call 800-577-TIPS (8477).
