Vice President Harris’ entry into the 2024 presidential race appears to have sparked renewed interest in “Veep,” with ratings up more than 300% this week.
U.S. viewership for the first season of the HBO political parody show rose 353% on Monday compared with the day before, according to entertainment data firm Luminate.
Based on streaming viewership data, Luminate said viewers watched a total of 2.2 million minutes of the series’ “MAX” on Monday, compared with 486,000 minutes on Sunday.
Viewership for season one remained steady on Tuesday, with an additional 2.2 million minutes watched.
An HBO spokesperson did not immediately respond to ITK’s request for comment.
The show, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a fictional, sometimes bumbling vice president who rises to the Oval Office, saw a surge in viewership at the same time that President Biden announced he was not running for reelection. Biden said Sunday he was no longer running for president and endorsed Harris.
Harris said last year that she was a fan of Louis-Dreyfus’s work and that “Veep,” which aired from 2012 to 2019, could sometimes be eerily realistic.
“Some of it is actually pretty accurate,” Harris told Stephen Colbert about the show.
