With the 2024 election approaching and the president still undecided, Democrats are going all out to court Gen Z voters with the support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
So how do you reach Gen Z voters? Unfortunately, it comes down to creating memes.
The latest meme making the rounds online is called “Kamala is a brat,” and is clearly designed to appeal to the youth vote.
“What does that mean?” asked Jill Savage of “Blaze News Tonight,” adding, “I don’t know. I had to look it up.”
In Gen Z slang, a brat is defined as “an icon, a symbol of authenticity and confidence in oneself.” The term was inspired by Charli XCX’s album “Brat” and led to a TikTok trend called “Brat Summer.”
Charli XCX then announced it to the world, writing, “Kamala is a brat” on X’s post.
CNN took time between news segments to praise what Savage called “Kamala’s newfound sass.”
“You’re just a girl who’s a little messy, who likes to party, who says stupid things sometimes,” one CNN host said, reading out Charli XCX’s lyrics and trying to make sense of them.
The Harris campaign apparently embraced the idea, changing the banner image on Kamala’s HQ X page to a copy of the “Brat” album and saying “Kamala hq.”
“Will this work?” Savage asked Chad Jackson, documentary maker and star of the film “Uncle Tom.”
“The strange thing is, it might actually be the case,” Jackson said. “Unfortunately, this is the state of American politics, and there is a movement to give suffrage to all.”
“This has happened many times before, especially with Democrats and the left. What they do is appeal to and emotive two groups in particular: young people and black people. The more you can emotive those two groups, the more likely you are to have people who feel very passionately about this candidate,” he added.
