The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Wednesday that its fighter jets intercepted Chinese and Russian bombers off the coast of Alaska.
NORAD NORAD said on Wednesday it detected and tracked two Russian TU-95 and two Chinese H-6 military aircraft operating within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). NORAD said Canadian and U.S. fighter jets intercepted all four aircraft.
The command said the bombers had not entered US or Canadian airspace and remained in international airspace, and that activity there was not considered a threat.
“We will continue to monitor competitor activity in North American waters and respond accordingly,” the command added.
NORAD explained that the Air Defense Identification Zone “begins where sovereign airspace ends,” an area of international airspace where “national security interests require immediate identification of all aircraft,” the command said.
NORAD I said in May The department was tracking four Russian military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, and said at the time that the activity was “a regular occurrence and not considered a threat.”
