“NORAD detected, tracked, and intercepted two Russian TU-95 military aircraft and two Chinese H-6 military aircraft operating within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on July 24, 2024,” the organization said in a statement.
ADIZ zones are perimeters surrounding a nation’s airspace that act as an additional line of defense to extend reaction time, especially in the event of an enemy attack.
All aircraft approaching the ADIZ zone must identify themselves for national security reasons.
However, a NORAD spokesman insisted that Chinese and Russian activity in the region is “not viewed as a threat” and that the agency would continue to “monitor competitor activity in North American waters and respond accordingly to presence.”
“NORAD is a unique binational command between the United States and Canada. NORAD employs a layered defense network with seamless interoperability of satellites, ground and airborne radars and fighter aircraft to detect and track aircraft and inform appropriate action. NORAD stands ready to employ a range of response options in the defense of North America,” the statement said.
