The Giants invested heavily in big offseason additions, so questions about Brian Burns’ health are worth noting.
The $141 million annual salary edge rusher was seen getting an examination on his right foot or ankle by team trainers late in practice on Monday.
In what may have been a precautionary measure, Barnes hung up his boots and sat out the final minutes of the session.
Head coach Brian Daboll spoke to the media before the team’s first full-pads practice of training camp but didn’t speak afterward, so we should know more about Barnes’ status when the head coach speaks again on Tuesday morning.
Tight end Lawrence Cager also left practice early because of a right leg injury and was seen throwing his helmet on the sideline in frustration.
Dexter Lawrence missed practice due to an illness, and Tyler Nubin (calf), John-Michael Schmitz (shoulder) and Tomon Fox (hamstring) also remain sidelined.
Undrafted free agent Jake Kubas has been practicing with the first team at guard over the past few days, and Jon Runyan Jr. could slip in at center when Schmitz is unable to practice.
“We only have five [starting offensive linemen] “Having John rotate through center practice might not be possible this early in camp, but it’s something we knew we’d do at some point,” Daboll said.
“It just so happened that JMS was out so we brought him in for a bit.”

Daboll said the first day of full-pad practice often brings with it some “anxiety,” but linebacker Matt Adams alleviated some of that anxiety by showing up to the morning team meeting in full pads and uniform.
“He had all his gear on, so I told him to stand up,” Daboll joked, before adding, “It’ll be good to go out there and work on my skills and really get the early stages of training camp started.”
