Congress passes bipartisan proposal requiring all American flags to be made in the USA

Today is a landmark day for Old Glory.

Congress passed a bill banning the federal government from purchasing American flags made outside the United States.

“The American flag is a symbol of our identity, our resolve and our values as one people. To respect its importance, the federal government should only use flags that are entirely made in the United States,” Collins said.

The rule change, called the “American Flag Act,” would require all flags purchased by the federal government to be manufactured in the United States; current rules require only 50 percent of materials to be domestically sourced.

The bipartisan proposal, co-sponsored by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), has attracted broad support not only for its symbolism but also for its potential to boost American jobs and manufacturing.

The United States imports millions of flags each year. In 2017 alone, more than 10 million red, white and blue flags were produced overseas, 99.5% of them made in China, supporters of the proposal say.

While these figures cover all flags, not just those purchased by the government, Collins and Brown said it’s time for the Stars and Stripes to come from the place it represents.

“The American flag is a symbol of our identity, our resolve and our values as one people. To respect its importance, the federal government should only use flags that are manufactured entirely in the United States,” Collins said of the proposal.
