Nearly eight in 10 Democrats said they would be comfortable with Vice President Harris being the party’s nominee. New Research.
Seventy-nine percent of Democrats support Harris as their top candidate, according to a new Associated Press/NORC Research Center poll, signaling a significant increase in satisfaction with her within the party since President Biden dropped out of the race last week and endorsed her.
The Associated Press noted that a separate poll, conducted before Biden left office and after his disastrous debate defeat against former President Trump last month, found that only about 4 in 10 Democrats were comfortable with an incumbent being the nominee.
The latest poll found that while an overwhelming majority of Democrats say they are comfortable with Harris, fewer respondents are confident she can beat Trump in the November election than Republicans who believe the former president will win.
About 88% of Republican respondents said Trump was likely to win the November election, while 10% said Harris would win. In contrast, 71% of Democrats said Harris would win, with an additional 28% saying the former president would win.
Overall, 56% of adults think Trump is likely to win the election, while 42% say Harris is likely to win, according to the survey.
When asked whether Harris would be a good president, adults were evenly split, with 42% saying she would be a good president and 42% saying she would not, and an additional 10% saying they didn’t know enough about the topic to answer.
Meanwhile, 38% said they thought Trump would be a good president, 56% said they didn’t, and an additional 5% said they weren’t sure.
Overall, 76% of adults approve of Biden dropping out of the race, including 72% of Republicans and 83% of Democrats. But Republicans are less supportive of the president’s endorsement of Harris as his nominee, with 15% of Republicans and 80% of Democrats approving.
The AP/NORC poll was conducted July 25-29 among 1,141 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
