An El Salvadoran man accused of killing a Virginia woman during a carjacking over the weekend was in the United States illegally, immigration officials said.
Jose Aguilar Martinez, 21, is charged in Sunday’s fatal shooting that resulted in the death of his grandmother, 54-year-old Melody Waldecker. Fox 5DC report.
Deputies with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office were called around 11:30 a.m. and found Waldecker deceased at the scene.
Investigators determined she was struck by her vehicle as the carjacking suspect fled the scene.
Aguilar-Martinez was located and arrested approximately 45 minutes later and was reportedly treated for an unrelated medical condition and taken to a local hospital.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told Fox News that Aguilar-Martinez entered the US as a “fugitive” but did not know when or where.
ICE filed a detention request to turn him over to immigration authorities upon his release. Local detention.
Some so-called “sanctuary” cities and counties routinely ignore these requests, releasing illegal immigrants suspected of crimes back onto the streets.
