Day five was filled to the gills with thrills, spills, tears and cheers. Host nation France are celebrating Léon Marchand’s extraordinary double-gold performance last night in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke – two triumphs hours apart that gave the 22-year-old from Toulouse his third individual gold at these Games. That dull roar hanging in this morning’s air is the echo of 15,000 French roaring as Marchand hauled in hot-favourite, Hungary’s world record holder Kristóf Milák, with inches to spare.

Team Great Britain are also exultant after a glorious day five highlighted by the gold medal-winning feats of Lola Anderson, Hannah Scott, Lauren Henry and Georgie Brayshaw in the women’s quadruple sculls crew and Alex Yee in the men’s triathlon, who pulled off a home-straight heist worthy of France favourite gentleman burglar Arsène Lupin himself. It vaults Team GB into fifth on the medal table behind China, Japan, France and Australia. Despite Katie Ledecky winning her eighth Olympic gold medal in the 1500m freestyle and tying the record for the most gold medals by a US woman, Team USA are a surprising seventh, but keeping their powder dry.

For Australia, dizzy highs – Jess Fox clinching her second gold of the Games with victory in the canoe slalom course at Vaires-sur-Marne – came with desultory lows, as the Matildas’ Olympic tilt ended in tears after losing 2-1 to the USA in their final pool game. Despite being without star striker Sam Kerr, the “Tillies” arrived in Paris as genuine medal contenders after capturing hearts with a fourth-place finish at the 2023 World Cup. Instead, they’re heading home early after the controversy-riven Canadians then delivered a coup de grace to the girls in gold by upsetting Colombia to progress.

It set Canada-Australia relations back another notch after the Maple Leafers beat the Boomers in the basketball and upset Australia’s world champion rugby sevens side in the semi-final to send them home without a medal. A Bryan Adams-ban on Sydney radio is currently being enforced by way of revenge.

Day five’s most anticipated – and controversial – moment came when Paris “reversed the tide of history” and declared the River Seine waters fit to host the men’s triathlon. Regardless of whether competitors copped a dose of E.coli with their broccoli, the event was a spectacle that never seemed quite possible until it was actually under way. Heavy rain, hysterical headlines and Netflix programming certainly didn’t help.

Important Events
Whether you’re an avid sports fan or just a casual spectator, the Paris Olympics provided plenty of amazing scenes and beautiful scenery. As Barney Ronay put it in his triathlon article, yesterday’s triathlon was:
“It’s an aesthetic triumph, an incredibly beautiful and dazzling event, a moment when Paris can stand on its shoulders and cannot help but marvel at the wonder of what man has achieved here.”
Team GB was celebrating when Alex Yi won gold in the men’s triathlon. With one lap to go, the Briton was 14 seconds behind his rival Hayden Wilde of New Zealand. Then Yi heard the four words that would change Olympic history…
Australians are crying tears of joy after Jess Fox won two gold medals in Whitewater, but also tears of shock after the Matildas’ dramatic defeat in the women’s soccer tournament.
Team Australia is doing well in fourth place on the medal tally, but as competition leaves the pool and heads to the track, the run of gold medals in the Southern Hemisphere on Days 1 to 5 may soon fade. Day 6 holds promise…
As the sixth day dawns, let’s take another look at the current medals table (soundtracked by famed French freestyler Plastic Bertrand performing on Top of the Pops).
Inspired by the words of Bishop Ethelbert Talbot of Pennsylvania, and infamously repeated by Pierre de Coubertin at a reception given by the British Government on July 24, 1908, the Olympic Creed has remained immortalized:The important thing in life is not to win but to fight. The important thing is not to win but to fight well..”
And there’s nothing else that embodies that. Eric Moussambani alias ““Eric the Eel”…
Today, 18 gold medals will be contested at the 2024 Olympics.
Of all the rivalries simmering at the Paris Olympics, the one that intensifies tonight is the pool battle for the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay title. Team USA, led by the women’s GOAT Katie Ledeckywill face arch rivals Australia. Molly O’Callaghan and Arianne Titmuss.
Australia won the prestigious 4x200m relay gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games before the USA got their revenge in London 2012 and Rio 2016. This impressive quartet also finished behind China and the USA at Tokyo 2020. Australia won the 4x100m relay gold medal in an Olympic record time, and the USA are desperate to make ends meet.
Or will China shock the world again with its Australian beef burgers?

Hello everyone and welcome to The Guardian’s live coverage of the sixth day of official competition at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
Day five was full of excitement, tears and cheers. Host nation France was celebrating an incredible performance last night by Leon Marchand, who won two gold medals in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke. The two victories, separated by a few hours, were the 22-year-old from Toulouse’s third individual gold medal of the Games. The dull cheers in the air this morning were an echo of the cheers that 15,000 French people shouted when Marchand beat world record holder Kristof Milak of Hungary by just inches.
Team Great Britain was also celebrating after a glorious day five, highlighted by gold medals from women’s quadruple sculls athletes Laura Anderson, Hannah Scott, Lauren Henry and Georgie Brayshaw, and triathlete Alex Yee pulling off a heist worthy of France’s favourite gentleman thief. Arsene Lupin He also won. The result propelled Team Great Britain to fifth place on the medal list, behind China, Japan, France and Australia. The U.S. team surprisingly only came in seventh, despite Katie Ledecky winning her eighth Olympic gold medal in the 1500m freestyle, tying the all-time record for most Olympic gold medals by a U.S. woman, but they’re still going strong.
For Australia, the dizzying high of Jess Fox winning the canoe slalom in Vers-sur-Marne to claim her second gold medal of the tournament came alongside a sour low when the Matildas’ Olympic campaign ended in tears with a 2-1 loss to the USA in their final pool match. Despite being without star striker Sam Kerr, the “Tillys” had won hearts by finishing fourth at the 2023 World Cup and arrived in Paris as genuine medal contenders. But a controversial Canada defeating Colombia to win gold and deal the final blow to the Australian women’s team meant Australia were sent home early.
Relations between Canada and Australia took a step back after the Maple Leafs beat the Boomers in basketball and Australia’s world champion rugby sevens team in the semi-finals, sending them home medal-less. In retaliation, Bryan Adams is currently banned from Sydney radio.
The most anticipated and controversial moment of Day 5 was when Paris “reversed the course of history” and declared the waters of the Seine suitable for hosting the men’s triathlon. Whether or not the athletes contracted E. coli from eating broccoli, the event seemed impossible until it actually began. Heavy rain, hysterical headlines, and Netflix shows It certainly didn’t help.
Day 6 promises more blood, sweat, tears and glory…
