The baby was handed over to Station 397. According to the fire department at 15109 E. 136th St., firefighters “acted quickly” to provide the care the infant needed. The baby is now in the care of Child and Family Services.
Indiana’s Safe Haven law allows people to surrender infants under 30 days old anonymously without facing prosecution. Babies can be surrendered to a fire station, hospital, emergency medical service station or one of 130 Safe Haven Baby Boxes across the state.
A baby box is a temperature-controlled incubator that is often built into the exterior wall of a fire station, police station, or hospital and can be accessed from the inside. Mothers who are at risk can safely and legally place their newborns in the baby box. Once the baby is in the baby box, the outer door is locked and the mother is allowed to get out before an alarm sounds to alert emergency personnel and hospital staff to the baby’s presence.
The baby is then quickly removed and sent to a hospital for a medical examination, after which the baby is usually placed in the custody of the state and often quickly put up for adoption.
“This important program ensures that infants and young children have a safe and secure environment while providing alternative options for parents in times of crisis,” the ministry said.
