Russell Brand on His Christian Faith — ‘I Don’t Belong to Myself Anymore, and That Is True Freedom’

Comedian and Hollywood actor Russell Brand commented on his Christian faith in a video posted to his 4.4 million Instagram followers on Wednesday, saying, “I don’t belong to myself anymore. That’s true freedom.”

“I’ve said before that there have been times when I’ve felt distant from Christ,” Brand began in the video, “and here’s a verse that has brought me back into connection with the Lord. It’s a verse from Isaiah: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, and you are mine.’

Brand further explained, “My faith has changed recently because I had this sense that maybe I was taking back control out of fear, that maybe I felt like I had to control the situation out of fear.”

“If you feel under attack or under threat, it is natural, reasonable and sensible to take back control.” Forgetting Sarah Marshall Starr continued, “But the sense of faith is allowing Christ to use his sub-molecular power to order all things, down to the particle, all the way up into the universe, because we’re dealing with an eternal King.”

“This is something I didn’t understand before I became a Christian – stepping out of the three-dimensional reality of the indomitable forces of materialism and rationalism into a transcendent realm of grace, where new freedom is given when we accept our sin, surrender to it and allow God to lead us,” Brand added.

“I don’t belong to myself anymore. That’s true freedom,” the actor concluded.

Breitbart News reported that Brand was baptized as a Christian in April, and that baptism was described as “an opportunity to die and be born again, to put away the past and be born again in the name of Christ, as Galatians says, so that we can live as enlightened and awakened human beings.”

“I know a lot of people are cynical about this growing interest in Christianity and returning to God, but to me it’s clear,” he said at the time. “As meaning fades in the modern world and our values and institutions crumble, we all become more and more aware that within us and all around us is an eerily familiar figure of awakening and calling that we’ve known all our lives. And to me, that’s so inspiring.”

December, Brand Said He read his followers from the Bible and from C.S. Lewis’ 1940 book “The Problem of Pain,” which explored the meaning of suffering in human life.

Earlier this year, the actor said he was reading Rick Warren’s A Purpose-Driven Life, adding that he wanted a “personal relationship with God.”
