Alleged intruder armed with 3-foot wooden stake throws rock at homeowner’s face. But victim has more lethal weapon on hand.

Earlier this week, an intruder armed with a three-foot-tall wooden stake hurled a rock at a Southern California homeowner’s face while trying to break into the home, police said. He told KUSI-TV.

However, the homeowner grabbed a gun and fired three shots at the alleged intruder, hitting him at least once in the chest, the station reported. The alleged intruder was pronounced dead at the scene, KUSI reported.

“The suspect may have thrown a rock at the glass of at least one other residence’s sliding door in an attempt to break the glass and gain entry.”

The Oceanside Police Department said they were dispatched to a home in the 4100 block of Diamond Circle just before 7:30 p.m. Monday for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Oceanside is about 40 minutes north of San Diego.

More from KUSI:

Police said the intruders, armed with rocks and a three-foot wooden stake, attempted to enter the home through an open sliding bedroom door leading to the backyard, where the female occupant was present at the time.

According to Oceanside police, a male resident then attempted to confront the intruder, but the man threw a rock in the resident’s face, then the resident grabbed a gun and fired three shots at the intruder, striking him at least once in the chest.

Police arrived on the scene a few minutes later and attempted CPR on the suspect, but the alleged intruder was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

KUSI said detectives responded to the scene and remained on scene for several hours investigating. The station said the names of the individuals involved in the incident have not been released.

“The suspect threw a rock at the glass sliding door of at least one other residence, potentially breaking the glass and attempting to gain entry,” Heather Mitchell with the Oceanside Police Department said in a news release Tuesday. “It is unclear if the suspect actually broke into the residence, but the resident was not home at the time.”
