Simone Biles topped the podium in the women’s all-around gymnastics final on Thursday night, taking home another gold medal, making her the oldest all-around champion since 1952.
The 27-year-old Biles garnered early attention with her performance on the Yurchenko double pike vault, a complex and difficult maneuver that will be renamed in 2023 after the American gymnast who became the first woman to land it in international competition, and she earned the top score of 15.7666.

A small mistake on the uneven bars didn’t stop her from winning the gold medal, and she returned to the lead on the balance beam with a score of 14.566 points, as Biles was just 0.166 points behind Rebecca Andrade of Brazil going into the final rotation.

She also became the oldest woman to win the women’s all-around title since Maria Gorokhovskaya, who won at age 30 in Helsinki in 1952.

Biles’ comeback comes after a rocky road at the 2020 Tokyo Games, when she suffered a severe bout of twisties and withdrew from the all-around final. While she focused on her mental health, her US teammate Suni Lee came out on top and won the gold medal in that event.
Lee won the bronze medal on floor exercise with a score of 13.535.
