The killings of Hamas political and military leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Mohammed Deif, as well as senior Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukr, have raised fears of a regional conflict.
Following the assassination, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that “we will end things with those who do us harm.”
“Once again we find ourselves in the very uncomfortable position of waiting for those with no track record of making pro-peace decisions to tailor their response in a way that appears to strengthen the military position without further escalating or de-escalating the situation,” the Guardian’s senior international affairs reporter said.
