Potential VP Pick Shapiro Under Fire for Anti-Palestinian Op-ed in 1993

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), who is considered a leading contender to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, has faced criticism from left-wing Democrats for writing a pro-Israel op-ed in 1993 that questioned the two-state solution.

In his op-ed, Shapiro said he volunteered to serve in an Israeli military base as a teenager and believes Palestinians are “too militant in order to build a peaceful homeland for themselves.”

of Philadelphia Enquirer report:

In an opinion piece titled “Peace is Impossible,” Shapiro, then a 20-year-old student at the University of Rochester, argued that a negotiated agreement between Israeli and Palestinian leaders would not end the conflict in the region, writing, “If history is any guide, peace between Arabs and Israelis is virtually impossible and will never come about.”

“Palestinians cannot coexist peacefully,” Shapiro wrote. “Even with Israeli and American help, they are incapable of building a successful homeland of their own. They are too militantly inclined to build a peaceful homeland of their own.”

Manuel Bondar, a spokesman for Governor Shapiro, said in a statement that the governor’s position has changed over the past 30 years and that he now supports a two-state solution.

Anti-Israel White House staff have reportedly been furious at the possibility of Shapiro being selected as Harris’ running mate.

Shapiro’s defenders argue that he is a victim of rampant anti-Semitism among the “progressive” left.
