Trump Comments on VP Harris Racial Identity ‘Despicable’ Insult

Sen. LaFonza Butler (D-Calif.) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that former President Donald Trump’s comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’ race were “despicable.”

Host Dana Bash said, “Let’s go back to the events that started this whole thing a few days ago, when the former president falsely claimed that the vice president had ‘blackened’ for political reasons. He’s since taken it even further, playing up her family’s Indian roots on social media and suggesting she isn’t actually black. You’re the only black woman currently serving in the United States Senate. You’ve known the vice president for a long time. What do you think about all of this?”

“I think this is a classic Donald Trump distraction and avoidance tactic,” Butler said. “It’s interesting that this controversy has come up at a time when Project 2025 has ties to Trump and his campaign and the leadership of his campaign has made sure to distance themselves from Project 2025.”

She added, “So, look, this is a total distraction. This is an insult, this is despicable. This is a woman who was born in Oakland, California, who has proudly proclaimed and lived her life by her eyes, who has used her entire identity to make fun of her whole life, and who has fully embraced who she is. Donald Trump wants to divide our country. The vice president wants to unite us no matter what and move everyone forward.”
