Sleeping on the ground isn’t ideal, but it’s better than a cardboard bed.
At least, that seemed to be the logic of Olympic gold medalist Thomas Ceccon, who was spotted sleeping in a park inside the Olympic Village.
Saudi rower Hussein Alireza posted A photo of Chekkon fast asleep on a white towel on Saturday under a tree and was tagged as a location within the Olympic Village.
The Italian swimmer, who won gold in the 100-meter backstroke, had already publicly complained about his accommodations in the Olympic Village, which have been heavily criticised throughout the Paris Games, after failing to qualify for the 200-meter backstroke final on Wednesday.
“The village has no air conditioning, it’s hot and the food is terrible,” Ceccon said. From The Sun“That’s why a lot of athletes transfer. It’s not an alibi or an excuse, it’s a reality that maybe not everyone knows about.”
“I’m disappointed that I didn’t make it to the final but I was just too tired. I couldn’t sleep night or day. The heat and noise here really bothers me.”
The Italian team declined to comment further to The Sun.
2024 Paris Olympics
The IOC has come under fire for the lack of air conditioning in the Olympic Village, the installation of “anti-sex” cardboard beds (a move intended to protect the environment), and the poor quality of the food.
“There are shortages of certain foods, including eggs, chicken and certain carbohydrates,” Andy Anson, chairman of the British Olympic Association, told The Times of London. “In addition, there are issues with the quality of the diet, with athletes being served raw meat.”
As a result, many players, including the entire U.S. women’s tennis team (except Coco Gauff), left the village and were relocated to alternative accommodations.
The recyclable beds have been the subject of much joke since their introduction in 2020, with many joking that they are only meant to support one person and therefore cannot be used for sex.
But what’s more worrying is that even one person is not getting a good night’s sleep.
Australian water polo player Matilda Kearns posted that she had “already had a massage to repair the damage” caused by the cardboard mattress.
Perhaps she should try sleeping on the ground for a more restful eight hours.
