Insights from a Former Mafia Insider
Luis Kasman reflects on his time with the infamous Gambino crime family and its notorious boss, John Gotti. He mentions he served as Gotti’s chief of staff, sharing the secrets of an underworld life filled with both power and danger.
Kassman recalls a time when the Gambino family had access to vast sums of money. “We had a big toy box in the attic of our house in Woodbury, and it had millions of dollars in it,” he noted, with totals fluctuating between $6 million to $10 million monthly, accumulating over $100 million annually.
In a recent documentary titled “Gotti’s Guy,” Kassman candidly discusses his relationship with Gotti, revealing details about his decade-long involvement with the crime family during the late 80s and early 90s. He describes being part of Gotti’s inner circle, often accompanying Gotti during legal battles and interviews with the media, where he was referred to as “Gotti’s adopted son.”
Reflecting on their bond, he expresses, “We had a brotherhood.” It seems he trusted Gotti, and vice versa—a dynamic that perhaps allowed him to navigate spaces that Gotti wouldn’t. “I could go places John didn’t want to go,” he explained, emphasizing the unique perspective he held as an outsider within the gang’s circle.
But as time passed, Kassman began reconsidering his choices. In his youth, he brushed aside moral dilemmas associated with his affiliations, only to later recognize them. “You could have disappeared at any moment… he was a mobster, a murderer,” Kassman reflects, acknowledging the gravity of Gotti’s lifestyle.
Despite the thrill and prestige associated with being close to such a figure, Kassman admits there were significant consequences. He faced legal troubles later in life, eventually becoming a confidential informant for the FBI, which included secretly recording conversations—even those with Gotti’s family when they were vulnerable.
The fallout from these actions was severe. Gotti’s son, John A. Gotti, publicly lambasted Kassman, labeling him a traitor. The strong sentiments surrounding their relationship illustrate the complexities of loyalty and betrayal within mob dynamics.
After a series of legal convictions, including a sentence for conspiracy and money laundering, Kasman has since distanced himself from his former life. Now residing in Florida, he reflects on the past with a sense of nostalgia. “I don’t miss it. I miss him,” he admits, revealing the bittersweet nature of his memories.
Through his experiences, Kassman offers a glimpse into the workings of organized crime and the profound effects it can have on personal relationships and one’s morals. His story is a reminder of the thin line between admiration and fear in the world of the Mafia.
