Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pondered Sunday morning that President Biden could join Mount Rushmore after choosing to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
CBS reporter Lesley Stahl asked Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about reports that she led the effort to remove Biden from the presidential race after his disastrous defeat in the debate against former President Trump.
Pelosi denied leading any attack to oust Biden, saying instead that Biden was “in great form” before deciding to drop out of the race, and suggested Biden’s choice was worthy of a spot on Mount Rushmore with other presidents.

Pelosi said she was “confident that Biden will lose” and was “on the phone negotiating to get Biden voted out of the election.”
“He was in a great position to make any decision. He was in great form,” Pelosi said. “He’s been a very influential president for the United States, a Mount Rushmore president.”
“Are you really saying Lincoln and Joe Biden deserve to be on Mount Rushmore?” Staal asked.
“Well, you have Teddy Roosevelt there, and he’s great,” Pelosi declared. “I’m not saying take him out, but you can add Biden.”
Pelosi also reiterated that she was not pressuring Biden to drop out of the race.
“No, I was not the leader of any pressure [campaign]Pelosi told CBS: “Let me say what I didn’t do. I didn’t call anybody. I didn’t call anybody. I could have always said to him, ‘I didn’t call anybody.'”

Days before Biden decided not to run again, multiple reports emerged suggesting Pelosi had pressured Biden to resign because she feared he would lose to Trump.
But Pelosi continued to publicly voice her support for the president, adding that the decision rests with the president, despite Biden’s insistence that he will run again.

“It’s up to the president whether he wants to run,” Pelosi told MSNBC at the time. “Time is running out and we’re all urging the president to make a decision. The overwhelming support of the caucus is not for me to say. I’m no longer head of the caucus, but the president is loved and respected and the people want him to make the decision, not me.”
