Border City Ambulance Stolen in Texas, Taken to Mexico

Authorities in South Texas continue to investigate the theft of a red city ambulance that was stolen during a call by an unknown man who then drove it into Mexico and abandoned it there.

The incident began Sunday morning in the Texas border town of Brownsville, where local fire and emergency personnel responded to a call about a man seeking medical attention and needing to be transported to a hospital. According to a statement from Brownsville Police, while medical staff were loading the man into an ambulance, the man forced his way into the driver’s seat and drove off southbound.

Authorities say the man was driving an ambulance and crashed through a road barrier and through one of the international ports of entry on his way to Mexico.

The incident sparked outrage in Brownsville and in the Mexican city of Matamoros in Tamaulipas state, where social media users posted photos of the ambulance driving through the port of entry and the town of Matamoros. It is unclear how the ambulance driver was able to get past security measures on both sides of the border.

Hours later, Mexican authorities found the ambulance abandoned in a park in Matamoros, and the suspects had fled.

By Sunday evening, Mexican authorities had handed the vehicle over to U.S. authorities at one of the international ports of entry in Brownsville. Brownsville police did not provide any details about the suspect or a motive for stealing the ambulance.
