Ken Paxton, supported by Trump, wins against John Cornyn in Texas GOP Senate runoff

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Triumphs in Republican Senate Runoff

In a notable Republican Senate runoff election, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, supported by former President Donald Trump, easily defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn, who has held office for nearly 23 years. Paxton moved on to a November election against Democrat James Talarico, winning by approximately 25 points.

The election, held at 9 p.m. ET, saw a turnout of about 49 percent. During a conference call, Paxton was reported to be leading Cornyn with 62.5 percent of the votes, translating to 505,741, compared to Cornyn’s 303,276 votes, which accounted for 37.5 percent.

Paxton’s win followed a week after Trump had openly endorsed him, declaring his strong support for Paxton. He referred to the attorney general as a loyal ally to both himself and the MAGA movement. Trump highlighted Paxton’s commitment to critical issues like tax cuts, border security, and the protection of Second Amendment rights.

Trump, however, didn’t shy away from criticizing Cornyn, labeling him a “good person” but noting that he was slow to support Trump during crucial moments in Trump’s political career. Paxton expressed his gratitude for the endorsement and his eagerness to uphold Trump’s America First agenda in the Senate.

Cornyn stayed in the race despite Trump’s backing of Paxton, and his campaign received nearly $150,000 in donations shortly after, which included contributions from some Democrats and Republicans who had opposed Trump. On election day, Cornyn defended his record, asserting his alignment with Trump’s policies, mentioning his role in confirming justices and supporting key legislation.

Meanwhile, Trump’s endorsement has created some tension among Senate Republicans, as some voiced displeasure over Trump’s criticisms of respected senators like Cornyn. Republican Congressman Don Bacon mentioned that such actions have upset party members, while others expressed that Trump’s involvement in Senate races hasn’t yielded favorable outcomes.

Despite the ongoing political discussions in Washington, the Senate now faces challenges with significant legislative work still incomplete. As Senator Thom Tillis criticized Paxton’s comments about Cornyn, he acknowledged Cornyn’s influence in Congress while also supporting the need for alignment with Trump’s values.

Vice President JD Vance also backed Trump’s endorsement during an interview, stressing that it sends a vital message about accountability to voters. In related developments, local news discussed whether Cornyn would support Paxton if he won, and Cornyn confirmed his support for the ticket.

Looking ahead, Paxton is set to face off against Talarico, who has a background as a former teacher and state representative. Paxton expressed skepticism about Talarico’s potential acceptance in Texas, suggesting that his views might resonate more with a place like California rather than Texas. He feels confident about winning in November if his campaign focuses on these distinctions.
