Josh Shapiro Shares Breitbart’s View on Israel

Say what you want about Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, whose lifelong stance on Israel, which he is so intent on disavowing, is roughly in line with the views of Breitbart News editorials.

I’m no fan of Mr. Shapiro. I thought his conduct during the 2020 election was terrible, for example.

In October of that year, well before Election Day, then-Pennsylvania Attorney General Shapiro Declared Speculation was rife that Trump would lose the state once the votes were counted, and conspiracy theories flourished.

But his view of Israel, which he asserted in a 1994 op-ed and has repeated ever since, is precisely right: Americans should be skeptical of a “two-state solution” until the Palestinians demonstrate a commitment to peace rather than terror.

A recent video posted by the pro-Israel group Stand With Us shows just how serious the problem is: in a “street interview,” Israelis say they still want peace despite the war, while Palestinians want to destroy Israel.

Mr. Shapiro wrote in 1994 that Palestinians were “too militant to build a peaceful homeland of their own.” (Personally, I was more critical of him at the time; I was a full supporter of the Oslo peace process.)

Though Shapiro’s views have moderated over the years, he still supports Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his argument that there must be peace in the region before a Palestinian state can be established.

Of course, Shapiro has now changed his tune. Even after the October 7 tragedy, he said he supported a two-state solution. He is rushing to disavow his previous views in order to take advantage of his chances of becoming Kamala Harris’ running mate.

And if elected, she would surely bend to her party’s radical left base and support her anti-Israel stance.

But so far, Shapiro’s positions on Israel have been largely consistent with those of Breitbart News. This is simply a fact.
