During Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Source,” CNN senior political commentator and former Obama adviser David Axelrod said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee, didn’t give a completely “honest accounting” of crime in his first speech as running mate for 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris because while crime is down overall, “there are certain types of crime that aren’t that directly impacting the quality of life in some urban communities.”
After watching a video of Waltz saying violent crime had increased under Trump and joking that it didn’t include Trump’s crimes, Axelrod said, “There’s a little bit of a danger there. Obviously, his punch line was very effective, and it just reminded people of who Trump is. The truth is, crime is going down, it’s going down across the country. But there are other types of crime that don’t that directly affect the quality of life in some urban areas. So, frankly, they should talk about that, too, because I think they will. Crime is going down, but certain property crimes and other types of crimes are really troubling and people are concerned about that. There’s no reason to shy away from that. The point is, they should point out the difference between Trump’s approach and theirs. He sees these issues as weapons to mobilize his supporters. He doesn’t see these issues as things that should be solved. And I think they need to address some of those issues.”
