Taiwanese Olympic Boxer Who Failed IBA Gender Test Advances to Gold Medal Fight as Female Opponent Makes ‘XX’ Gesture

Taiwanese Olympic athlete Lin Yu-ting, who has been at the center of a gender debate that has garnered international attention, beat Turkish female fighter Esra Yildiz Kahraman by unanimous decision on Wednesday night to book her place in the gold medal round.

After the match, Kahraman makes the “XX” symbol with her fingers to show that she is, in fact, a woman.

The pair have been embroiled in controversy since last year when both Uting and Algerian fighter Imane Kherif failed gender tests.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, IBA president Umar Kremlyov explained the organisation’s decision to strip Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting and Algeria’s Imane Kherif of eligibility to compete in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2023. “DNA tests have revealed that several athletes tried to deceive their colleagues by posing as women. The tests proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes have been excluded from competition,” Kremlyov said. Said.

Kahlaman aggressively pursued Yu Ting throughout the bout but was unable to match the Taiwanese fighter’s strength and distance.

Despite failing gender tests for 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) remains adamant that Yuting and Keli are both women and should compete in the women’s division.

“All athletes competing in the women’s category are complying with the eligibility rules,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. Said“My passport states I’m a female and that’s exactly what it states.”

Yuting will compete for gold in the women’s 57kg class on Saturday.
